Gaming Deals: Where to Find Free Game Codes

Free Game Codes: What's Actually Real?

Free game codes exist, but 90% of what you find online is scams, surveys that never pay out, or keys for games from 2009. Here's where to actually find legitimate free stuff.

Epic Games Store - Free Games Every Week

Every Thursday, Epic gives away at least one game for free. Sometimes it's indie stuff, sometimes it's AAA titles like GTA V, Tomb Raider, or Borderlands. You keep them forever once claimed.

Set a reminder for Thursdays. The deals rotate weekly, so if you miss it, it's gone.

Prime Gaming - If You Already Have Prime

Amazon Prime includes Prime Gaming (formerly Twitch Prime). Every month you get 5-10 free games, plus in-game loot for Apex, FIFA, Call of Duty, etc.

If you're already paying for Prime, you're wasting it if you're not claiming these. The games are permanent - they don't disappear when your subscription ends.

GOG Giveaways

GOG.com occasionally gives away DRM-free games. They're usually older titles, but classics like Fallout, Witcher 1, or System Shock. Sign up for their newsletter - they announce giveaways there first.

The Free-to-Play Tier List

F2P games can be incredible or predatory nonsense. Here's what's actually worth your time (and won't pressure you to spend):

Genuinely good F2P:

  • Fortnite - love it or hate it, the battle pass system is fair
  • Apex Legends - best F2P shooter, no pay-to-win
  • Warframe - hundreds of hours of content, can earn premium currency
  • Path of Exile - deep ARPG, only cosmetics cost money

Avoid:

  • Mobile games that throttle progress after 10 minutes
  • Anything with loot boxes as the core mechanic
  • "Free" MMOs that lock half the game behind subscriptions

CD Key Sites: Legit vs Shady

Not all key resellers are equal. Some are grey market (legally questionable), some are just cheaper distributors.

Trusted:

  • CDKeys.com - legitimate, buys keys in bulk from cheaper regions
  • Fanatical - official bundles, works directly with publishers
  • Humble Bundle - pay-what-you-want bundles, supports charity

Risky (buyer beware):

  • G2A, Kinguin - marketplace model, sellers can be dodgy. Keys sometimes get revoked.

If a key seems too cheap (£5 for a £50 game), it's probably from a stolen credit card or region exploit. Your call, but know the risk.

Console Codes: The Best Freebies

PlayStation Plus Monthly Games

If you have PS Plus, you get 2-3 free games every month. Claim them even if you don't play them immediately - they stay in your library.

PlayStation also runs "Play at Home" campaigns where they give away games to everyone (no sub needed). Last time it was Horizon Zero Dawn and Ratchet & Clank.

Xbox Game Pass - The Netflix of Gaming

Not free, but £7.99/month for 100+ games is absurdly good value. First month is usually £1.

If you only want it for one game, subscribe for a month, finish it, cancel. You're not locked in.

Nintendo Switch Online

Comes with 100+ NES and SNES games. If you're paying for online play anyway, you get the retro library for free.

Subreddits Worth Following

  • r/FreeGamesOnSteam - tracks temporary freebies on Steam
  • r/FreeGameFindings - aggregates Epic, GOG, and other giveaways
  • r/GameDeals - sales and bundles across all platforms

Enable notifications for these if you're serious about catching deals. Free games go fast.

Browser Extensions for Game Deals

Install IsThereAnyDeal - it tracks prices across 50+ stores and alerts you when a game hits your target price. You can import your Steam wishlist and get notifications.

Augmented Steam is another extension that shows historical price data directly on the Steam store page. Never overpay again.

The Humble Choice Trick

Humble Choice gives you 8 games/month for £9.99. But here's the play:

Subscribe only when the monthly lineup is good (they announce it in advance). Pause your subscription the other months. You're not forced to stay subscribed, so cherry-pick the best months.

Retro Games: Completely Legal Free Options

Tons of classic games are now freeware or abandonware:

  • Archive.org - hosts thousands of DOS games playable in-browser
  • itch.io - indie devs often release old projects for free
  • OpenRA, OpenMW - open-source remakes of Command & Conquer and Morrowind

Don't Fall for Fake "Generators"

Any website promising "FREE PSN CODES - GENERATOR 2026!!!" is a scam. They'll ask you to complete surveys, download malware, or give away your email.

Legitimate free codes come from:

  • Official store giveaways (Epic, GOG, PlayStation)
  • Promotions with brands (e.g., buy a GPU, get a game code)
  • Community giveaways on Reddit or Discord
