UK Supermarket Loyalty Schemes Compared

Tesco Clubcard

How it works: 1 point per £1 spent. 100 points = £1 voucher (4% back).

Best features:

  • Clubcard Prices (20-50% cheaper on hundreds of items)
  • Reward Partners (double or triple your voucher value at Pizza Express, Legoland, etc.)
  • Clubcard Challenges (bonus points for hitting spending targets)

Weaknesses: Points take 3 months to convert to vouchers (slow).

Verdict: Best overall. If you only sign up for one, make it this.

Sainsbury's's Nectar

How it works: 1 point per £1 spent. 100 points = £0.50 voucher (0.5% back - much lower than Tesco).

Best features:

  • Works at Argos, eBay, Esso (wider ecosystem)
  • Frequent "double points" events (1-2 times per month)
  • Personalised bonus point offers via app

Weaknesses: Base rate is terrible (0.5% vs Tesco's 4%). You need bonus events to make it worthwhile.

Verdict: Good if you shop at Sainsbury's and Argos. Otherwise, meh.

Asda Rewards

How it works: Earn "Cashpot" by completing missions (e.g., "Spend £20 on groceries, earn £2").

Best features:

  • Higher rewards than Tesco/Sainsbury's when missions are good
  • Instant cashback (no waiting for vouchers)
  • Gamified - actually fun to use

Weaknesses: No base earn rate. If there are no good missions, you earn nothing.

Verdict: Best for people who actively engage with the app. Passive shoppers won't benefit.

Morrisons More

How it works: 5 points per £1 spent. 5,000 points = £5 voucher (1% back).

Best features:

  • Simple, transparent (you see your balance immediately)
  • Vouchers sent automatically when you hit thresholds
  • Works at Morrisons petrol stations

Weaknesses: Lower earn rate than Tesco. No partner rewards or bonus systems.

Verdict: Fine if you shop at Morrisons, but nothing special.

Co-op Membership

How it works: £1 to join (one-off). Earn 2p for every £1 spent (2% back for you, 2% to local causes).

Best features:

  • Instant cashback (credited to your account immediately)
  • Works at Co-op funeral services, insurance, and legal services (weird but useful)
  • Members-only deals (20-30% off selected items)

Weaknesses: Co-op is more expensive than Tesco/Asda, so 2% back doesn't offset higher prices.

Verdict: Good if you prefer Co-op's ethos. Not the best value otherwise.

Aldi and Lidl: No Loyalty Scheme

Neither Aldi nor Lidl have loyalty cards. Their model is "we're already the cheapest, why would we give you more off?"

Is it worth it? Yes. Even without a loyalty card, Aldi/Lidl are 20-30% cheaper than Tesco/Sainsbury's with loyalty prices.

Waitrose myWaitrose

How it works: Free membership. No points, but you get:

  • Free coffee/tea in-store (one per visit)
  • Free newspaper (The Times, Telegraph, etc.)
  • 10% off selected items
  • Weekend treats (free bakery item on Fridays)

Verdict: Not about savings, more about perks. If you're in Waitrose anyway, sign up for the free coffee.

Iceland Bonus Card

How it works: £1 spent = 1 point. 2,000 points = £1 voucher (0.05% back - worst rate in the UK).

Why bother? You get access to "Bonus Card Prices" (similar to Tesco Clubcard Prices). Without the card, you're paying 20-50% more.

Verdict: Only useful for Bonus Card Prices. The points are worthless.

Which One Should You Use?

If you shop at one supermarket exclusively: Use that supermarket's card (duh).

If you shop at multiple: Tesco Clubcard is the best all-rounder. Carry it even if you only visit occasionally.

If you're price-conscious: Aldi/Lidl + Tesco Clubcard combo. Buy most stuff at Aldi, top up at Tesco with Clubcard Prices.

Stacking Loyalty Cards with Other Savings

  • Tesco Clubcard + Clubcard Prices + coupons (best stack)
  • Sainsbury's Nectar + Nectar Prices + double points events
  • Asda Rewards + Yellow sticker reductions (timing is key)

Petrol Loyalty Schemes

Most supermarket cards work at their petrol stations:

  • Tesco: 1 point per £2 spent on fuel (weaker than groceries)
  • Sainsbury's: 1 point per £1 on fuel (same as groceries)
  • Asda: No fuel rewards (annoying)
  • Morrisons: 5 points per £1 on fuel

Best for fuel: Sainsbury's or Morrisons.

The App Is Mandatory

All these schemes require the app now. Physical cards still work, but:

  • Bonus offers are app-only
  • You can't see your balance without the app
  • Digital coupons are app-only

Download the app, scan at checkout, done.

Don't Let Loyalty Cards Make You Overspend

The trap: "I'll buy this because I'm earning points!"

You're not saving money if you're buying stuff you don't need. Loyalty cards are a bonus, not a reason to spend more.
